Private Pilot Training Program
To become a private pilot you need to complete ground and flight training, pass an FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) written exam and pass a practical flight exam.
The FAA requires you to successfully complete a program in ground instruction before taking the written test. Administered by Lasergrade at the Reno Flying Service office. We have several options available for you to complete this, from one-on-one personalized training, to use of our Jeppesen DVD, CD-Rom and training manuals.
Our Jeppesen flight training curriculum is divided into three stages. The first stage is from first flight to solo flight. You learn everything you need to be able to make safe solo flights in our local area.
The second stage is the cross country stage where you learn how to plan and fly cross country trips and fly at night. You also learn how to navigate by referencing the ground, aviation charts and by use of the navigation instruments.
The third and final stage is preparing you to take your practical exam or “checkride” with a designated examiner.
The FAA requires a minimum of 40 hours of flight training including 20 hours with an instructor. The training is competency based, meaning that you need to be able to perform to a specific standard. Realistically the national average is 55-60 hours and that is what we see as typical for our students who aggressively work at their training and fly 2-3 days per week. We feel that it is most effective to do your ground and flight training at the same time. You'll see better results and progress faster in both areas.
